my name is julianna cecilia salinas and i am a poet, playwright, and screenwriter based in new york city.
i hold a BFA from brooklyn college in creative writing with a minor in film studies. during my time as an undergraduate student i worked as a teaching assistant in english composition and in screenwriting. in 2023, i was awarded the louis b. goodman creative writing scholarship and my poem matamoros was selected as the winner for the academy of american poets university & college poetry prize. in 2024, my original one act play tuesday was selected as the winner of the ottillie grebanier drama award.
my work, which has been featured in the rising phoenix review, the junction, stuck in the library, and soon in beyond words magazine, is sprinkled with literary, historical, and pop culture references and often reflects on chicano culture, intersectional feminism, mental health, and the american millennial experience.
a lifelong performer, i have explored many forms of creative expression like acting, slam poetry, dance, oral interpretation, radio, and more. i have performed stand-up comedy in several venues around texas, like the velveeta room and cap city comedy club in austin and the laugh out loud comedy club in san antonio, and i competed in the funniest person in austin competition in 2012.
i am a second-generation mexican-american and i grew up in san antonio, texas but i currently live in brooklyn with my partner and our cat. i love horror movies, hello kitty, roller skating, and beyoncé.
